Major: Communication with a concentration in Religion and Philosophy

Laurel Green

What stands out from your experience here at Roberts?

The relationships I made during my time at Roberts are the things I cherish the most. I made lifetime friendships and relationships and met professors and staff whom I admire and have shaped my perspective on life in a positive way. The atmosphere at Roberts was encouraging and caring because of the attitude of the community here.

What is the best thing about studying Communication?

The best thing about studying Communication is the worldview it has given me. I understand the human perspective in a new way, and how to navigate ethical, organizational, relational, and political situations. Pairing this with a concentration of Religion and Philosophy has been a great experience because of my passion for Biblical studies and understanding ethical and human community situations.

Who is your favorite professor here at Roberts?

The professor that challenged me to grow academically and in confidence as a person was Dr. Elvera Berry, a communication professor at Roberts. She has a passion for teaching and expanding students’ perspectives, which has directly influenced my life and desire to continue to learn and grow to make the world a better place.

What is your favorite course here at Roberts?

My favorite course at Roberts was Exploring the Christian Worldview with Dr. Richard J. Middleton. This course changed my understanding of Biblical theology and my personal faith. It allowed me to question what I truly believe, which deepened my faith. I would strongly recommend this course to every Roberts student, regardless of their major.

Share about being on the team or being part of a group and managing your course work?

Throughout my time at Roberts, I have served as a leader of the club In Jesus’ Name on campus. This has been a rewarding experience in my personal, relational and faith life. Working with the other members and leaders of In Jesus’ Name to serve the people in the Rochester area, especially at the Rochester Family Mission, has given me a heart for serving others as well as strong relationships with those in the club. It is a challenge to give up hours of your time every week as a college student but has given me experience in prioritizing coursework and has always been worth it.

What’s your favorite food at Garlock?

My favorite food at Garlock is the sweet potato casserole they make for the Thanksgiving meal.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is the benches by the pond.

What is your favorite Roberts memory?

My favorite Roberts memory is getting engaged and celebrating with all of my family and friends who I have made during my time at Roberts. Being surrounded by such a loving community who wanted to celebrate with us was a day I will always remember.

What is your favorite Rochester restaurant?

My favorite Rochester food is Indian food from the Raj Mahal in Henrietta.

How have you served others?

Every week, we go downtown to the Rochester Family Mission to worship, serve food, and create relationships with the people of Rochester from all kinds of diverse backgrounds.

What advice would you give to a new student?

I would tell new students to make the most of the everyday moments and relationships during college because they will be the memories that you cherish when you graduate. Challenge yourself to try new clubs or activities because they will help you grow and experience new things. Remember to take care of yourself and reach out for help when you need it because Roberts is a caring community who is willing to help.

Faculty Feedback:

Dr. Elvera Berry (Dr. Mrs.), Professor of Communication

Students keep me engaged in what I love: learning and teaching. Interacting with and learning from a student like Laurel Green keeps me on my toes! I encountered Laurel in a wide range of Communication classes, enabling me to delight in her development over time. Behind her quiet demeanor lies an inquisitive mind seeking connections and ready to explore implications of whatever she is studying, as well as a loving heart reaching out to understand and support others. I have witnessed her ongoing diligence in the study of human communication, her openness to new ideas and others' perspectives, and her ability to learn and contribute in a professional Internship. I have also witnessed Laurel's graciousness under pressure, her hospitality serving a diverse public during summer campus employment, and her faith-based commitment to those who live on the margin in the inner city. With Laurel in our world, we are all better off!
