“I am unique! I am Latina!” event empowers young Latina women
On Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Roberts Wesleyan College will proudly host the ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! (SUSL) rally, an event that empowers young Latina women, encouraging them to develop self-confidence and celebrate their heritage. The event is open to young Latinas ages seven to 18, however, participants 13 or younger must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or authorized adult.
SUSL translates to “I am unique! I am Latina!” and serves as a public education initiative, led by Latinas Unidas, that is meant to inspire and empower young Latina women, encouraging them to develop a strong sense of character and become proud leaders in their community.
At the start of the event, the girls participate in a pep rally, led by their “Madrina,” and get to hear from successful Latina women sharing their personal and professional experiences. The theme of this year’s rally is “Salud y Bienestar” (Health and Wellness). Throughout the day, participants attend workshops according to their age, which will focus on the importance of being healthy Latina girls—highlighting areas of wellness, mental and physical health. The day’s events culminate in a “Quinceañera finale” fashion show with a display of gowns.
"Roberts Wesleyan College is delighted to host the 2019 ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! rally,” said Lisa Martinez DeVinney, Enrollment Outreach Manager for the School of Business at Roberts Wesleyan College. “Roberts is dedicated to providing education for character to all our students and this inspiring event for young Latina women is an ideal fit with our mission to prepare thoughtful, spiritually mature and service-oriented individuals who will help transform society."
The SUSL initiative was introduced to Rochester in 2002 by the Catholic Family Center and has been led by Latinas Unidas since 2004. Each year, the event is hosted by a local college or university in Rochester and part of the day’s schedule includes a tour of the college or university hosting the event.
“We’re also excited to partner with Latinas Unidas to create a sense of community and to serve young Latina participants,” DeVinney added. “We hope that while on campus, participants will consider the possibility of obtaining a college degree as a step in planning their future.”
