Roberts Psy.D. Clinical/School Psychology Program Receives APA Accreditation

Achieved in less than three years and prior to the program’s inaugural graduation

Roberts Wesleyan College is pleased to announce the Psy.D. program in Clinical/School Psychology has received an accreditation on contingency from the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association (APA), effective Oct. 28. After a comprehensive review process, the accreditation status verifies that the Roberts Wesleyan College program is consistent with the Standards of Accreditation for Health Service Psychology, according to the APA.

The APA recognized the quality of the curriculum and training the Robert’s program and licensed faculty provides, preparing students for fields in health service psychology (HSP) by integrating empirical evidence and practice in compliance with professional standards. The innovative curriculum blends the professional areas of clinical and school psychology in a programmatic sequence of courses, culminating in the completion of a dissertation that addresses an issue relevant for the professional practice of clinical/school psychology.

"We are thrilled to receive this accreditation on contingency before the first cohort graduates, as an indication that our program meets the high standards of training expected by the profession,” said Dr. Julia Grimm, dean and chair of the department of psychology. “This accreditation gives students an assurance of value, as attending and graduating from an APA-accredited school will not only allow access to excellent in-class and practicum experiences, but also creates more opportunities for internships and ultimately, jobs.”

The Psy.D. program faculty plans to pursue an accredited status as early as November 1, 2021 after obtaining graduate outcome data. The accreditation on contingency status will remain in effect until October 28, 2023 and all students who complete the program during this time will have recognition for completing an APA-accredited program.

Roberts Wesleyan College currently has 30 students enrolled in the program. The first cohort of eight Psy.D. students is expected to graduate in May 2020.
