The core values that Chris Maloney developed at Roberts are traveling with him as he makes an impact on the world around him. Originally drawn to the College for track & field, Chris arrived at Roberts with an undecided major. Thanks in part to the investment of his faculty advisor Dr. Fazar, Chris soon discovered an interest in Physics and Engineering. Chris now serves as an Applications Engineer at QED Technologies, a company designing groundbreaking optics manufacturing solutions in optics for customers across the globe. Maloney has published over 15 papers in various fields.
It was Dr. Fazar who helped Chris to design a path from Roberts to RIT for a 3 + 2 (year) program leading to a BS degree in Physics and a BS and MS in Microelectronic Engineering. And Chris continues to pursue higher learning, now working toward a Master’s Degree in Strategic Leadership at Messiah College. As part of his MS program at RIT, Chris conducted sponsored research in Leuven, Belgium in the field of EUV Lithography and he continues to travel frequently across the globe giving him the opportunity to exhibit the strong values and integrity that he developed at Roberts Wesleyan.
Dr. Fazar remains a significant resource to Chris, providing letters of recommendation including the one that helped him achieve a significant honor this past May. Chris was the inaugural recipient of the Yaver Scholarship from SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. The scholarship recognizes an individual seeking an advanced degree who has "the business knowledge required to facilitate the advancement and application of optics and photonics research and technology." Maloney was honored by the $10,000 award, saying: "To young researchers and scientists, scholarships such as this help us to realize our ambitions and drive advancement in the optics and photonics community.”
Along with a dynamic career and his studies, Chris and his wife Kelly (’07) prioritize serving their local community and those in need. The two volunteer as tutors at the Rochester Family Mission, an organization that promotes literacy and shares Christ with inner-city youth. Chris encourages students at Roberts who are at the beginning of their career path saying, “College is a time to make mistakes and find your passions. Do not be afraid to fail when trying something new. If you fail 100 times but find 1 thing that you love, then you have made it.”
