Guest Artist: Tobias Greenhalgh, baritone

The Cultural Enrichment Committee is pleased to welcome Tobias Greenhalgh, baritone in recital on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. in Shewan Recital Hall. Originally from Rochester, Tobias graduated from Greece Athena High School in 2007 and went on to earn both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School.

Tobias learned and first performed Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise in Vienna. He writes, “Winterreise is a very special piece of music for the Viennese, and performing it there was a big deal for me. To able to bring the piece back to Rochester means something special.” Come enjoy this intimate performance of Schubert's beloved work, mingled with Rochesterian roots and Vienna's touch.

Opera News describes Tobias as “so clearly headed for success.” Included in his vibrant performance schedule are recent debuts at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, and on tour with the Glyndebourne Opera. Other recent performances include the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, and both the Theater an der Wien and the Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna.

Tobias will be joined by collaborative pianist Joel Harder. A native of Canada, Joel received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Alberta, Master's degree from the University of Ottawa, and a post-graduate degree in Accompaniment from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He is currently in his fourth year as a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellow in Collaborative Piano at The Juilliard School.

Joel is an alumnus of the Banff Centre for the Arts, a recipient of the Johann Strauss Foundation Award for study at the Franz Schubert Institute in Austria, and is a piano fellow/alumnus of the Tanglewood Music Centre. His notable career includes performances at Alice Tully Hall, the Caramoor Centre for the Arts in the US, Bishopsgate Hall in Great Britain, and the Beethovenhaus in Baden, Austria; as well as coaching at the Cincinnati May Festival, the Castleton Festival in Virginia, Highlands Opera studio and the Chautauqua Vocal Arts Program.

This recital is free and open to the public.
