Student Spotlight: Alissa Borlaug– Junior ‘19

What is a memory or experience that has helped you grow while being at Roberts?

This past year, I have found a tight knit group of friends, that I can feel will grow with me and stick with me after graduation next year. They have helped me find new perspectives on things and have encouraged me to go out of my comfort zone by trying new things, such as photography, a healthier lifestyle, and just having fun by finding that balance between work, school and friends.

How has your faith been transformed in your time at Roberts?

The constant surrounding of the Christian atmosphere has helped me to develop a better relationship with God over the past three years here at Roberts.

What did you do in (Washington) DC with the Social Work Program this past April?

We did a lot of lobbying on Capitol Hill. It was so interesting to discuss a topic we were researching in class (Opioid epidemic) and talk to the senators about it. It was nice that they took the time out of their day to engage with us.

What was the best thing about going to DC for your Social Policy class?

My favorite part about the trip would be when we visited the Library of Congress. It is so big, with inspiring quotes everywhere. It also has the BEST view of the capital building.

How are faculty inspiring you in your major?

My advisor, Dr. Crofford; I cannot even begin to explain how helpful, caring and patient she is with me. She gives real life scenarios about what she has gone through in her time in the field of social work. It has been so helpful to have a better understanding of what I am getting into.

Why social work?

My first year here, I was undecided. I could fit into any major and be content. Karen Frasier in registration was my advisor the first year and she really helped me to figure out where I was supposed to be. Sophomore year I took two social work classes and fell in love, both with Dr. Crofford and the department.

What is your favorite course?

Oh that’s a hard one... Definitely "Marriage and the Family", because it was the class I got the most out of. I could apply what I learned to my actual life and that was when I realized Social Work was for me, and it just clicked! I do not just want to learn out of a textbook, but learn and be able to make a difference in others’ lives.

What is your favorite thing about the Social Work major?

I would have to say the girls I am with. We are all really close and it is so nice to come to class and see all of their smiling faces.
