Ora et Labora: On Being the People of God in Times Like These

Once again we recoil in the wake of overwhelming violence. In a single week, the headlines have been filled with the tragic deaths of Alton Sterling, Philander Castile, five police officers in Dallas and 292 victims of yet another terrorist attack in Baghdad.

Sadly, it feels like we’ve been here before.

But we must never succumb to the sense that this is the new normal for our time or our culture. As people of faith, we are called to weep with the brokenness of our world and bear unfailing witness to the life-transforming power of the gospel.

At Roberts Wesleyan College and Northeastern Seminary, our longstanding motto, ora et labora, pray and work, provides the frame within which we seek to engage the world: In the face of the overwhelming needs of our day, we commit ourselves anew to implore the mercy of God. We pray for the guidance of the Almighty, the grace of the Lord Jesus, and the healing presence of the Holy Spirit. And we roll up our sleeves to work for both spiritual and social transformation.

May we become a humble, faithful and mighty force to radiate the presence of God in our needy world. God’s grace is abundant. Lord, let us be your vessels. Amen.
