Share thisRoberts Expands Adult Degree-Completion Program for Teacher Certification
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Roberts Wesleyan College’s Pathway to Teaching Program is now open to more candidates seeking teacher certification. The nontraditional degree-completion program was originally designed to enable paraprofessionals and teacher’s aides employed by the Rochester City School District to earn initial teacher certification while continuing to work full time.
The expanded Pathway to Teaching Program is now open to any adult learners who have at least 60 hours of previous college credit and would like to complete a bachelor’s degree leading to New York State teacher certification. Students in the Pathway to Teaching Program complete their pedagogical requirements through courses that meet one night a week for four hours, 100-150 hours of field work and 14 weeks of student teaching. The program totals 15 months, with the option of earning a Bachelor of Science in teacher education with dual certification in childhood education and students with disabilities (grades 1-6); dual certification in adolescence education in a specific content area (biology, chemistry, earth science, English, French, math, physics, social studies or Spanish) and students with disabilities generalist (grades 7-12); or single certification in adolescence education students with disabilities generalist (grades 7-12).
An information session on the program will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in Room 240 of the Hastings Center for Academics at Roberts Wesleyan College.
“The Pathway to Teaching Program represents our commitment to helping men and women with diverse backgrounds and experiences fulfill their dreams of serving children and youth through the teaching profession,” said Dr. Sharon Harris-Ewing, chair of the Department of Teacher Education at Roberts Wesleyan College and director of the Pathway to Teaching Program.
“We are very pleased to be able to utilize this proven educational model to help prepare highly qualified teachers, and are excited to be able to expand the opportunity for adult learners to obtain teacher certification, ” added Dr. David Basinger, dean of the School of Professional Studies at Roberts Wesleyan College.
This collaborative program launched in August 2010 and has enrolled five cohorts of students since that time. A sixth cohort of students is slated to begin in January 2013.
