ROCHESTER, NY – Joy Rebstein received the Education Leader Award presented by the Rochester Regional Veterans Business Council (RRVBC) on Wednesday, November 14th at the RRVBC Awards Luncheon. Joy Rebstein is an OM 130 graduate (Dec. 2005) and an employee at Roberts Wesleyan College. She currently serves as Program Advisor for the Department of Adult Professional Studies and as the Assistant to the Dean of SLAS (Stan Pelkey). Joy is part of a larger team here at the college that services our military and veteran students, namely: Cheryl Raduns, Marcie Krause, Lesa Kohr, Rich Burke, and Penny Cannon. The combined efforts of this team has allowed Roberts Wesleyan College and Joy Rebstein to be recognized for going “…above and beyond their counterparts to create an atmosphere that is welcoming to veterans, procedurally friendly to military students, and well equipped with staff dedicated to assisting veterans.” Please help us in recognizing Joy, Cheryl, Marcie, Lesa, Rich and Penny for the passion they have and the great work they do (behind the scenes) to help our military and veteran students enroll and succeed at Roberts.
Education Award
The Greater Rochester area is rich with more than a dozen Institutions of Higher Learning. As a result, the veterans of this community are fortuitously awarded a wide variety of choices in their pursuit of higher education. Over 1,000 veterans are currently enrolled in colleges, universities, technical schools, certificate programs and the like in the five county region surrounding Rochester. Many of these students bring excellent federal and state veteran benefits with them, making them an attractive population to recruit. Thankfully, many area schools are beginning to recognize that veterans have more to offer than just tuition dollars; these students make immeasurable scholastic contributions, they possess superb classroom leadership skills, and they’re equipped with a unique soft skill that can only come from military experience. The schools that have recognized these valuable traits have gone above and beyond their counterparts to create an atmosphere that is welcoming to veterans, procedurally friendly to military students, and well equipped with staff dedicated to assisting veterans. The recipient of the annual Rochester Regional Veterans Business Council Award will be an individual person or an entire Institution of Higher Learning that has demonstrated outstanding service to veteran students. Accolades will be based predominantly on quality of service to veteran students; total number of enrolled veterans, community activities related to veterans, and other quantitative criteria may be considered but will not be a determining factor in award selection.
