Students Apply Course Work To Benefit Keenan's Restaurant

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Roberts Wesleyan College students taking Dr. William Todd’s marketing research and marketing management classes teamed up to develop a promotional strategy for Keenan’s restaurant in Irondequoit. The project took one semester, and the students presented their findings on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

"It’s important for college students to get as much real-world experience as possible,” said Todd. “We’re grateful to Keenan’s for the opportunity to partner, and I hope that the restaurant owners found the project equally rewarding.”

“This experience has been a total eye opener,” said Keenan’s owner Sue Roe. “It was so re-energizing to hear the statement, ‘building on the past, planning for the future’ because it communicates that we can keep what we have established and still grow our business.”

Project recommendations ranged from banners to promotional-based ideas such as bar specials, half-price appetizers and a take-out menu. The students involved were Ali Campbell, Bethany Salvia, Luke Buccio, Jessica deBlieck, Danielle Dukes, Chris Nagle, Stryker Ostafew, Allison Newcombe, Danielle Rizzo, Brent Rathke, Jackie Kemp, Brian Sieling and Matt Oklevitch.

Members of the Roberts Wesleyan College chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) had previously worked with Keenan’s on a “greening” project in 2010. Students provided Roe with environmentally friendly recommendations that have led directly to cost savings on the restaurant’s energy bills. Keenan’s is located on the border of the 14621 zip code, an area adopted by SIFE in an effort to spur economic development over the next six years.
