Lecture Highlights ‘Roberts Reads’ Project’s Campus-Wide Consideration of its Fall Semester Selection

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Dan Gediman, co-editor of The New York Times bestseller This I Believe:  The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women, will visit Roberts Wesleyan College on Thursday, Oct. 20, to discuss the book that is the current selection of the campus-wide “Roberts Reads” Project.

Gediman, executive director of This I Believe Inc. and a long-time radio producer, will present “The Story of This I Believe” at 4 p.m. in the Andrews B. Hale Hall of the Cultural Life Center.  The event is a part of the “Roberts Reads” Project, launched in 2008 to encourage the entire College community to read and engage in conversations about a common book and its themes.

Each semester, a new book is selected by the Roberts Reads Committee.  This I Believe:  The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women was the book chosen for this year’s fall semester.  Former CBS and CNN Senior News Analyst Daniel Schorr calls the book a “forward-thinking compilation” that “serves as a wonderful antidote to the cynicism of the age.”

Based on a 1950s radio series of the same name and idea, This I Believe Inc. is an international, non-profit organization that collects essays from thousands of people describing the core values that govern their lives.  The essays are heard on public radio and chronicled in several This I Believe books.  This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women, features 80 essayists – some famous, some unknown – who share their deepest beliefs with readers.

“This semester’s title allows the Roberts community to reflect on how we express our varied beliefs and how we tell our stories,” said Dr. Peter Knapp, professor of education at Roberts and co-chair of the Cultural Enrichment Committee, which is co-sponsoring the Oct. 20 event.  “Dan Gediman’s visit will be a public discussion on essays from the original 1950s radio series, compared with those of today, and how they all regard the substance and process of the beliefs that guide our daily lives.”

In his 25-year radio career, Gediman has won some of the most prestigious awards in broadcasting, including the duPont-Columbia Award.  In addition to his role at This I Believe Inc., he is an accomplished public speaker, songwriter and performer, with four albums of original music released to date.

Gediman’s appearance is free of charge and open to the public.
