Tammy Briceland McGarvey’97, Caring For the Whole Person

AeN_Nov12_Tammy_Briceland_McGarveyTammy Briceland McGarvey’97 has used her Roberts nursing experience to help treat mind, body, and spirit.

As a freshman in high school, Tammy knew she wanted to attend Roberts Wesleyan College for nursing.  After looking at 20 other colleges, her opinion stayed the same.  Tammy recalls, "I soon realized Roberts had the best nursing program in Rochester, and since graduating many other colleagues have told me the same."

Tammy worked as a nurse at both Highland and Unity Hospitals.  Sensing the need for more training, she completed a Master of Nursing at SUNY Brockport in 2002.  Since that time, Tammy has worked in multiple settings as a Nurse Practitioner.

Tammy’s passion for patients’ health led her to step out in faith and open her own micro-practice in Pittsford, Hope Family Health, NP PLLC.  In her work at hospitals, she observed that many times medical professionals treated the symptom, but not the root causes of the problem.  She wanted the opportunity to do more.

At Hope Family Health, Tammy is able to treat patients with a focus on mind, body, and spirit.  This holistic approach was one she learned at Roberts.  Professors like Susanne Mohnkern, Janice Hurley, and Kathy Walker taught students that nursing is a calling, not just a profession.  They helped students learn to listen to the patient in an effort to find root causes of problems and to prioritize the patient’s needs.  They also inspired Tammy to leave Roberts with the belief that her work would make the world a better place.

The Hope Family Health website states, “The practice focuses on nutritional medicine and natural healing, while optimizing conventional medicine treatments.  Rather than symptom management, where symptoms are masked, the approach at Hope Family Health is to treat the underlying cause.”

With only about 100 private practice nurse practitioners in New York State, Tammy’s practice is a unique organization.  However, as she fulfills her calling to help people realize full health, there’s nothing else she would rather be doing.

Tammy and her husband Jonathan’95 live in N. Chili, NY and have four children.  They attend Grace Covenant Church, and are active members in the community.  For more information on Hope Family Health, please visit their website
