Social Work Department Responds to Call to Serve

Dr. David Skiff and Jose Santiago were two of the volunteers from Roberts Wesleyan College Introduction to Social Work class that responded to the call for help with the Channel 10 and the American Red Cross Disaster relief telethon that came early Wednesday morning on October 31.  Hema Autar, Harmony Dionne, Creasie Hannah and Bethany Rose manned the phones from 2:30 to 4:30 pm later that afternoon.  Dr. Skiff and Jose manned the phones from 4:30 to 6:30.  This initial telethon raised over $30,000 over the course of the evening for the victims of hurricane Sandy.  This opportunity to participate as an early responder came about because of the increasing involvement between the Department of Social Work and Deb Polumbus, the co-chair of the Rochester Region Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters and the Community of Monroe Citizens Corps Council.  Deb’s team will be guest speaking at RWC in Dr. Skiff’s class in early December.
