Childhood Literacy (Birth - Grade 6)
*Students enter this program in the Fall and Summer Semesters
The Professional Literacy program leads to Professional Certification in Literacy Education. The program is for teachers who already hold Provisional or Initial Certification at the childhood or adolescence level and desire to become a Literacy Specialist or a classroom teacher with strong literacy skills.
Education focused on the student
The emphasis of the program is articulating theory and practice through carefully designed courses and supervised clinical experiences. The program stresses both the teaching of effective reading and writing skills as well as assessment, teaching strategies, and critiquing books. Learners in this program strengthen their pedagogical base through classroom discussion, on-line assignments, and supervised practice in our Literacy Clinic.
Students will culminate their experience with a literacy portfolio that chronicles their coursework and experiences. Additionally, students choose a topic of interest which is researched and developed into a professional article. This program may be completed through full-time study; however, most students complete their work in five semesters of part-time study. Students may enter the program in either May (summer semester) or September (fall semester).
Classroom experience is strongly encouraged prior to entrance into the Literacy Program. (Substitute teaching is to be considered experience.)
