Membership Requirements for BSW Students:

  • A declared social work major
  • Junior or higher standing
  • Twelve credits of required social work course work at Roberts Wesleyan College
  • A GPA of 3.5 or greater for the required social work courses
  • An overall GPA of 3.0
  • All students must have participated in humanitarian volunteerism for a minimum of 20 hours (during the past 12 months from the time of application) that focus on the promotion of social justice and humanitarian goals.

Membership Requirements for MSW Students:

  • 15 semester hours at Roberts Wesleyan College
  • A GPA of 3.8 or greater
  • All students must have participated in humanitarian volunteerism for a minimum of 20 hours (during the past 12 months from the time of application) that focus on the promotion of social justice and humanitarian goals.

Mu Omega Chapter’s Definition of Humanitarianism:

Humanitarianism is defined as an experience that involves having direct contact with or providing services for suffering populations, to the point of helping and/or advocating to reduce the suffering and to otherwise improve the welfare and happiness of people in those populations.                  

Membership Process:

If your cumulative GPA meets the requirements, you will receive an invitation letter in the spring semester to make application for Phi Alpha membership. You will then be asked to complete and submit an essay of 500 words or less describing your humanitarian volunteerism experiences. All applications will be reviewed by the Phi Alpha Membership Committee, and applicants will be notified as to the results of this review.  The following is provided to assist students in the process of planning humanitarian volunteer activities as well as in writing the essay.                    

Essay Guidelines:

Introduction              

  1. Explaination of volunteer hours
  2. Activities completed
  3. Documentation of volunteer hours
  1. How activities are related to humanitarian work
  2. Impact and learning experiences from these activities
  3. Conclusion

Note: The essay must be in APA format and consist of 500 words or less.      

Examples of Humanitarian Volunteerism:

Following are some humanitarian volunteerism activities that have been submitted in essays submitted in the past.  However, there are many other types of volunteerism activities that qualify for this requirement.      

  • Cambodian Orphanage Missions Work
  • Volunteering with Burmese Refugees in Rochester
  • Alaska Mission Trip
  • Teaching English to Children in Russia
  • Hurricane Relief Volunteerism (e.g., Katrina)
  • Volunteering with Rochester Family Mission
  • Costa Rica Mission Trip
  • Volunteering in Local Soup Kitchens
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Volunteerism with the Red Cross Disaster Unit
  • Grant Writing for Humanitarian Projects
