Transcultural Nursing

Costa Rica, 2012

Costa Rica, 2011

On May 15, 2011, eleven nursing students and two Nursing Faculty from RWC left Rochester headed to Costa Rica for an eight day missions trip.  We landed in the city of San Jose and headed to Pavas where we stayed with host families.  We were working with the organization Christ for the City International, an urban ministry that reaches out to meet the needs of some of the poorest cities in the world.

We spent one day going house-to-house giving out invitations for a health fair.  The following three days were spend holding health fairs in three of the neediest sections of Carpio, a squatter community of approximately 30-35,000 people.

At each site the people who came had height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, and blood glucose measured.  Parasite medicine was also given along with a month's supply of vitamins to take home.  After oral care and nutrition teaching for everyone, toothbrushes and tooth paste were handed out, and reading glasses were distributed to adults needing them (the students had collected over 700 toothbrushes and toothpaste and more than 100 pairs of reading glasses).  We were able to detect new cases of diabetes and high blood pressure and each person went home with a paper listing his or her health information.  Contained in the handout was also a clear presentation of the Gospel.  Altogether in those three days, we cared for 772 people.

It was an opportunity to serve others and share the love of Christ.
