NSG 520 | Research Methods | 3 credits


This course emphasizes the theoretical concepts relevant to research methods that are used by nurses and other health care providers engaged in research and health care services. The course will begin with a review of concepts important to all research. After a review of the research process, quantitative and qualitative research approaches will be reviewed including: problem statement, research question, literature review, ethical considerations, research methodology and data collection, and management of data. Emphasis is on understanding and using appropriate methods and procedures to address problems of interest to nurse leaders and nurse educators. The role of theory and ethical issues involved in the conduct of research is addressed. Prerequisite: Introduction to statistics and NSG 510.

NSG 535 | Research for Advanced Nursing Practice | 3 credits

The course will focus on advanced critical analysis and utilization of nursing research via evidence-based nursing practice models and will include an emphasis on synthesizing evidence as a scholarly practice endeavor.  The students’ understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methodology as well as examination of the role of the nurse leader and educator in relation to nursing research and evidence-based nursing practice continues to be developed.  Translation of evidence into the practice setting is addressed in depth. The use of research and evidence-based nursing processes to improve decision-making in the health care setting will be explored in depth.  Prerequisite: NSG 510, 520

NSG 510 | Theoretical Foundations for Advanced Nursing Practice | 3 credits

This course focuses on critical analyses of theory and its use for advanced nursing practice. Nursing’s scientific body of knowledge is examined through consideration of selected nursing models, theories, and constructs. Selected theories, models, and concepts from social and behavioral sciences, which enhance nursing as a scientific discipline, are also considered. Foundational to this course is the exploration of the ontological and epistemological issues central to theoretical thinking which include the art of critical thinking in nursing, the process of concept formulation and theory building. The inter-relationship between theory, practice and research is examined and various methods for developing scientific knowledge for practice are explored. Application of nursing theories to nursing practice is emphasized as the student’s chosen theoretical base for advanced practice is identified and developed.


NSG 550 | Advanced Professional Role Development | 3 credits

Students will examine the multiple roles of the master’s prepared nurse leader and educator in today’s complex health care environment. The role of the educator and leader as change agent will be explored within the context of using the best evidence to inform the role of leader and educator and transform practice.

MNI 660 | Graduate Project | 3 credits

The purpose of the graduate project is to identify a clinical problem, analyze the problem, and propose an evidence-based change to address the problem. Students will choose problems within their area of clinical specialty, thoroughly review and analyze the available literature/information, identify the current best practices and, using a change theory/evidence-based practice model, propose a change that would lead to improved quality and safety for patients. The student will include measureable outcomes to evaluate the practice change in the proposal. The proposal will be developed as a substantive, formal paper in addition to a professional poster design and power point presentation, which prepares the student to deliver a professional presentation appropriate to a number of settings (e.g. academic, practice, continuing education).

Nursing Informatics Modules

MHI 500NI | Health Care Informatics | 3 credits

This course introduces all of the fundamental elements of informatics; health information systems, health records systems, and information technology. The clinical and administrative information needs and use of computer tools of a health care organization are covered. Students will study the interrelationships between administrative data and clinical systems. Students will study the differences between and Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Electronic Health Record (EHR), and a Personal Health Record (PHR). The course also covers the role and function of Health Information Exchanges (HIE) such as a Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO).

MHI 515NI | Health Care Data and Document Management | 3 credits

This course provides an in-depth view of typical health care IT systems, data and document management and information challenges facing health care knowledge workers. Implementation of electronic content management systems and interoperable electronic health records are explored. Students will also study data models, data conversion, data warehousing, data mining and mechanisms for data sharing and transfer.

MHA 580NI | Health Care Financial Management | 5 credits

This is an overview course that will provide an in-depth investigation of health care accounting and finance. This course is intended to give those who seek to manage health care organizations the accounting and financial management foundation they need to assure that their organizations produce information that will support their responsibility to make necessary and sound decisions. The course will focus on the operations of health care organizations such as not for profit and for profit hospitals, physician groups and other health care groups including how these organizations use accounting and financial systems for decision making. In this course, we will examine the health care organization as a management function and the basic principles of accounting followed by financial statement analyses, cost accounting, cost shifting, budgeting, managing accounts receivable, materials management and health care economics. We will examine these topics and their use in planning, control, evaluation and “real life” work examples. The course covers all the essential functions in health care accounting and financial operations that would be experienced throughout the Health Care industry, except for the insurance business and those entities which have special and additional requirements for being for-profit. During the course the participants will carefully construct what the accounting and finance department is expected to accomplish. The course objectives are reinforced through the lecture notes and supplemental readings, significant group discussions, homework problem sets, a case study, topic presentation, and a final paper and presentation.

MHI 525NI | Health Care IT Standards | 3 credits

This course covers key standards in Health Informatics Systems. The course explores specific health care IT standards and reviews the benefits that the adoption of standards brings toward the successful health care transformation. The course will review legacy standards and terminologies, ICD-9, ICD-10, SNOMED, HL7, X12, DICOM, NCPDP, HITSP, HIPAA, NIST, XDS, XDS-I, etc.. The role of non-medical standards in medical informatics will also be studied.

MHI 545NI | Health Care Systems and Design | 3 credits

This course focuses on the critical role of health information systems and technology planning, operation, and management in health care organizations. Topics addressed include the analysis, design, selection, implementation, operation, and evaluation of health information technology and systems in a variety of settings such as health systems, hospitals, and medical practices. This course also reviews tactics and tools for constructing a health care information technology strategy and plan.

MHI 595NI | Decision Support Systems | 3 credits

This course covers trending and forecasting, the capital budgeting process, and return on investment in HIT. In addition, issues such as supply chain management, clinical algorithms, and care plans/clinical pathways and implementation strategies as related to IT purchases will be covered. Adult learners will study the development of rules, implementation of systems, and the evaluation of decision support systems in the HIT arena.

MHI 575NI | Health Care IT Policy, Regulation and Law | 3 credits

This course reviews the areas of IT policy, regulation, and law with an emphasis on risk management. Specific attention will be given to regulation, risk, and security as it relates to HIPAA compliance, electronic medical records (EMRs), pre-populated forms issues, data mining for research, informed consent, DNR forms, health care proxy, and regulatory reporting to local, state, and federal authorities.

MNI 645 | Nursing Informatics Internship | 3 credits

This 140-200 hour internship is designed to give graduate nursing students experience in nursing informatics and healthcare informatics positions. The focus of the internship is on the Nurse Informaticist’s role in health care settings including effective communication and team-building and facilitating quality outcomes through use of technology, as well as gaining experience in protecting privacy and security of health information and the system design life cycle.  The students will write 5 specific learning objectives in consultation with their mentor and faculty member to accomplish during their internship.
