The Master of Science Family Nurse Practitioner program is designed for working Registered Nurses (RN’s) in New York State who hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing and are seeking licensure and certification to provide primary care as a Family Nurse Practitioner. The program is designed to build knowledge and skill in Nursing Science, Leadership, Quality, Technology, Policy, Health Delivery Systems, and independent clinical practice. (RNs) can complete this program in 36 months, taking one 8-week class at a time. With the exception of one 1-week class, courses are 100% online. 600 clinical hours are required.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the Master of Science Family Nurse Practitioner program at Roberts Wesleyan University, students must meet the following criteria:

  • A BS degree with a nursing major from an accredited program.
  • Unencumbered licensure to practice as a registered professional nurse in New York State.
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00.
  • A grade of B- or higher in an undergraduate statistics course.
  • Two years of hands-on nursing experience. In certain cases, the Graduate Curriculum Committee may consider other relevant health care experience.
  • Two professional references. One should be a former academic educator to testify about your capability to handle graduate-level work. The other reference should be from a current or recent health care supervisor.
  • A 500-word admissions essay outlining your career objectives and why you chose Roberts Wesleyan University.
  • You will need to review and acknowledge the technical standards published on the Roberts Wesleyan University Nursing School website.

Admission to this master's degree program is open to all qualified individuals, and the program will consider young adults and adult students who identify with the program's mission.

If English is not your primary language, or you attended a non-English speaking college, you will need to complete the internet-based TOEFL with minimum scores of Reading 22, Writing 24, Listening 22, and Speaking 26. You must send the scores directly from the assessing agency.

If you have enrolled in other a Nurse Practitioner graduate programs, (such as a Master of Science or Doctor of Nursing Practice) program at another school, but have not completed your degree, you will need to include in your essay your reasons an essay explaining your reasons for leaving the other program. Additionally, one of your references should your professional reference must be from the program director at that school.

Students who need financial aid can get it through unsubsidized federal direct loans and federal graduate PLUS loans.

Master of Science Family Nurse Practitioner Curriculum

The Master of Science Family Nurse Practitioner curriculum satisfies the national board certification, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and APRN licensure standards.

Once you graduate, you qualify for the national certification exam to get a family nurse practitioner license through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
