HSI Student, Stacey Castro

Roberts Wesleyan College has added some new programs to their curriculum, one of them being Homeland Security, and Applied Intelligence, or HSI for short. The HSI program, designed and headed by Professor Mark Concordia, who was previously assigned to the FBI’s joint terrorism task force for 13 years, is structured to create a holistic approach to law enforcement. The program includes various types of classes such as art, communications, and psychology classes that all connect together with Criminal Justice. The purpose of this is to get students career ready, and to expand the skills, and knowledge of future law enforcement agents.

The core criminal justice classes in the program challenge students to work together, and get to know each other. These classes as well challenge students to think critically, and quickly while faced with tough dilemmas officers in the law enforcement field face every day.

As an HSI student, I am provided with many resources, and a community of students who look out for each other, and help the other succeed. I am provided with a chance to participate in undergraduate research, network with law enforcement professionals, and have a hands on experience in the simulation room. Being an HSI student has allowed me to improve my communication skills, develop computer science skills, and most importantly, the program adapts to my needs and highlights my strengths.
