My Experiences as an HSI Major at Roberts, Ben Consler, HSI Major, May '18

Most of us have heard it said at some point in our lives that God works in mysterious ways. It seems to have become an almost cliché expression that we use to explain the things in life that don’t make sense to us. Over the last few years however, I have seen firsthand the incredible truth behind that statement.

Ever since I was about 5 years old I had my life pretty much figured out. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life and I knew how I was going to get there. I had always intended on pursuing a career in the military as a fighter pilot. After an unfortunate medical incident in high school however, that path was no longer an option. Following graduation, I completed an Associate’s degree in general sciences with intent to continuing studies in wildlife conservation, an intent that quickly changed after taking biology and chemistry classes. I also worked to earn my civilian pilot’s license during this time. It ended up being a Google search that led me to Roberts. I saw in the list of programs one titled Homeland Security and Applied Intelligence. Intrigued, I decided to inquire further. I learned that the HSI program was a brand new degree intended to prepare students for a career in the intelligence community or federal law enforcement. Up until that point, I had never really considered a career in law enforcement, but I felt drawn to learn more so I set up an information meeting with Professor Mark Concordia, who started the program. Professor Concordia has a long background in law enforcement both at the local and federal level. After meeting with him I decided that this field of study sounded very interesting, so I decided to apply. Looking back, I believe that God led me to that decision.

After a year of study in the HSI program, I can honestly say that I have never regretted it for a moment. The classes have been fun, interesting, and sometimes quite challenging. Professor Concordia has always encouraged me to be the best I can possibly be in every single area of study. Professor Glenn Grana, who teaches some of the intelligence courses, also brings a wealth of knowledge and experience into the classroom. He has been an incredible resource as I have considered career options. Both professors have been instrumental in helping me get an incredible internship opportunity where I am able to put the skills I have learned to use in the real world. Combined with other classes, these experiences have made me feel prepared and excited for whatever career God has planned for me.

As I go into my senior year, I can’t help but look back and see the path my life has been led down. The plans that I had were not even close to what I believe God has planned. From having never thought about a career in law enforcement to now planning to pursue employment with the FBI, it is easy to see how He has a purpose planned for my life. In my eyes, my experiences at Roberts are proof of my opening statement. God does indeed work in mysterious ways.
