Criminal Justice Department Updates

On October 17th, the Criminal Justice Department facilitated an 8 hour crisis hotline training for students to begin their certification to work with Willow Domestic Violence center manning their 24 hour crisis hotline.  Volunteer Advocate Training consists of domestic violence education and preparation for the hands-on work provided, including responding to crisis line calls, providing peer counseling, facilitating support groups, providing court advocacy, and many other free and confidential services .   Students at RWC received training in the first stage in a multi stage process to become crisis hotline workers.   Following this training, they meet with representatives from Willow to continue the process to become active participants in the fight against domestic violence.   Students were respresented from Criminal Justice, Social Work, and Psychology.

Exciting collaboration continues between the departments of Criminal Justice, Nursing, Social Work and now North Eastern Seminary to conduct emergency room simulations in the Spring 2016 semester in the New Crothers Science and Nursing Center.   This is the 2nd year that criminal justice students will be participating in this through Professor Concordia’s Integrative seminar class.   Students will gain valuable real world learning opportunities through hands on simulations of emergency room simulations involving a criminal justice component.    Last year it was a fatal accident and domestic violence.  Also, the Criminal Justice department is exploring new ways to utilize the simulation lab for Crime Scene and Interrogation practicums. Scheduled the week of November 9th, students from Professor Concordia’s criminal investigation class will conduct mock interviews of suspects utilizing the state of the art simulation labs in Crothers nursing and science center.   The interviews are part of a notional case students in the class have been conducting regarding a triple homicide.
