Professor Cindy Davis had the privilege of attending the Allied Genetic Conference in Orland Florida, July 2016.  The meeting was organized by the Genetics Society of America and included research talks from primary investigators from all over the world. Model organisms represented at this meeting included yeast, zebrafish, mice, Drosophila, C. elegans (worms) and ciliates.  Dr. Davis had the opportunity to not only hear talks concerning the organism that she works with (yeast) but also to learn about work being done in other organisms. It was an exciting, busy, amazing 5 days of learning about current genetic research.

In August, 2017, Jason Taylor, Emily Smithers, and Amy Kovach traveled to Greeley, Colorado to attend the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE).  This conference focuses on innovation in science education at the college level.  Emily Smithers and Amy Kovach presented a poster at the conference entitled “Using an interdisciplinary course to increase scientific literacy and improve oral and written presentation skills.”  Emily and Amy shared about their experience in teaching a unique interdisciplinary course that taught students how to read primary sources, write scientifically, and communicate effectively.

In addition, Amy Kovach gave an oral presentation entitled”Expanding the Adopt-a-School Model to Support the STEM Magnet Program at Nathaniel Rochester Community School in Rochester, NY.”  In this presentation, Amy shared about the innovative work that the Math and Science club is doing with a Rochester inner-city elementary school.  Roberts Wesleyan College students have been volunteering once a month to teach hands-on-science lessons to fourth grade students.  Recently the Math and Science club redesigned the fourth grade curriculum for this program and developed a curriculum for the third grade.  The club is expanding this program to the third grade this month.  Both presentations were well received by the BCCE community!
