New Program: Exercise Science Bachelor's Degree

Beginning this fall semester Roberts Wesleyan College now offers a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. This program is recommended for students pursuing careers involving the application of exercise physiology to fitness instruction and programming.

“Opportunities in the exercise science field are anticipated to see continued growth due to our aging population and the growing cultural emphasis on nutrition, fitness and sport,” said Jason Taylor, chair of Roberts’ Department of Biological & Chemical Sciences. “We are excited to launch this new exercise science program that will combine an emphasis on physical fitness and training with an immersion in the basic sciences, producing graduates with practical skills, credentials, and academic distinction in math and science.”

Upon receiving a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, students will be prepared to obtain professional certification from recognized organizations, such as the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, and the American Academy of Health and Fitness Professionals. These credentials are increasingly required for fitness work involving healthy and patient populations in fitness, sports and clinical settings.

“At a time when more and more people are making lifestyle changes to improve their health and well-being, it makes sense for Roberts to play a role in training students for professional positions that support and educate those individuals,” said Julie Grimm, dean of the School of Natural & Social Sciences. “It fits well with our institutional mission, especially in terms of service to humankind.”

With a strong foundation in sciences coursework, the program will be combined with the use of modern exercise physiology laboratory equipment and internship experiences to prepare graduates for work in health and fitness facilities, corporate fitness programs, medical fitness and rehabilitation programs.

Peter LaCelle, exercise science program director and professor of biology, adds, “Roberts is in the unique position to offer education in the area of exercise science from a Christian perspective, a particularly important consideration for students desiring to make an impact in fields from health assessment and therapy to athletic training and performance, fields that involve a great deal of intimate client interaction, and represent populations in both physical and emotional need.”
