Rachel Graham, Biology Instructor/Lab Coordinator Rachel graduated from Houghton College with a degree in biology and from Simmons College with a Master's in Education. She taught middle school science in PA, MA, SC, and NY before coming to Roberts 15 years ago. Rachel is the instructor for general biology labs, anatomy and physiology lab and microbiology labs and the lab coordinator for the biology department.

Here are some of the topics we will be discussing:

  • Microscopy- using both dissecting and compound light microscopes to observe living and prepared slides, making and staining slides, comparing plant and animal cells and organelles, measuring specimens under the microscope using millimeters and micrometers
  • Cell processes- separating plant pigments with chromatography, observing diffusion and osmosis and using chemical tests to determine direction of molecule movement, modeling cell division (mitosis and meiosis), cellular respiration and photosynthesis
  • Genetics- bacterial transformation using pGLO plasmids, gel electrophoresis of normal and sickle cell anemia hemoglobin, genetic survey of class including PTC tasting, Mendelian genetics with fast plants
  • Animals- survey of animal phyla including dissections (earthworms, crayfish, fish, frogs), classification, survey of human body systems including dissection of heart and brain (sheep)
