Directed Study

A Directed Study gives a student the opportunity to study material in a mode other than through regularly scheduled courses. The Directed Study is designed and closely supervised by a faculty member. It usually covers the same material as the equivalent classroom experience, including written work and examinations. Because faculty members direct such studies, students must consult with them for assistance in registering for these non-classroom experiences.

The minimum number of student-instructor meetings shall be four, plus twice the number of semester hours granted, for example:

The total contact hours shall equal the minimum number of required meetings—six hours for a one-semester hour course, eight hours for two-semester hour course, and ten hours for a three-semester hour course.

A Directed Study may not be taken to replace a D or an F grade received for a regular classroom course. No more than 10 percent of the minimum requirements for the major or the total program may be met as Directed Study and Independent Study combined.

A separate registration form for Directed Study is available in the Office of Registration or online on the RWC intranet Registration page. The  form must be on file signed by the instructor, the Department Chair, and the Registrar to make the registration official. The course must be completed within the same time limitations as a classroom course. However, the course may be extended for a second semester with the approval of the instructor if the student requests an extension at least two weeks prior to the end of the initial semester of study. An N grade is given if the work being continued is satisfactory.
