Roberts Wesleyan College provides a challenging curriculum in the sciences as preparation for professional programs. Students in the Pre-Physical Therapy Program typically pursue a B.S. degree with a major in Biology. Students planning a career in medicine (or a related field) may major in Biochemistry, Biology, or Chemistry. Such students need to determine the specific requirements of the professional school or schools to which they plan to make application. They should understand that good scholarship (grade point average of 3.50 or higher) is an important prerequisite to being considered for entrance into professional schools, particularly medical school.

It is recommended that students interested in medicine (or a related professional field) select appropriate course work in consultation with the Pre-Professional Health Advisor. The coursework will help to fulfill requirements for one of the following degree programs offered in the Division of Natural Science and Mathematics:

  • B.S. degree in Biochemistry
  • B.A. or B.S. degree in Chemistry with Biology minor;
  • B.S. degree in Biology with Chemistry minor;
  • B.A. degree in Comprehensive Science with concentration in either Chemistry or Biology.

Students may choose other majors to pursue at RWC while preparing for a career in the health professions.  In order to complete a major and meet the medical college minimum requirements, the student must select courses carefully, beginning with the freshman year.  All students are encouraged to take an introductory seminar course entitled "Introduction to the Health Professions" in which health professionals will visit and describe their particular health profession to the class.

The Pre-Professional Health Advisor at Roberts Wesleyan College is a member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP).  This organization provides additional resources and meetings to advisors in order to provide accurate and updated information about all of the health professions to students.

Students should know that health professions seek candidates who have previous experience and exposure to the health professions and who have participated in activities outside the classroom.  Because of the limited openings in medical schools and other health-related schools and the intense competition, students should plan alternative career options if they are not initially accepted.
