Biochemistry is a fast-changing and dynamic field of study that applies the fundamental laws and techniques of chemistry to understanding the chemical structure and reactions of living organisms. The Bachelor of Science degree is an interdisciplinary 46-semester hour program including courses in chemistry, biochemistry and biology. A core sequence of two 3-semester hour lecture courses covers the essential elements of biochemistry and molecular biology. A two-hour biochemistry laboratory course provides a thorough introduction to essential techniques and methods used in modern biochemical research. Independent research is emphasized in a 1-semester hour research project.
SPECIFICS OF THE BIOCHEMISTRY B.S. DEGREE
Minimum Total Hours: 124
Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 60
General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Division). Exceptions: lab science requirement and mathematics proficiency are met through the major requirements.
Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.
Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies.
Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application should be submitted at the end of the sophomore year. A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required for acceptance to the major.
Major Requirements: 66 hours as follows:
- 21 hours in biology: BIO 101, 101 lab, 102, 102 lab, 301, 301 lab, 302, 302 lab, 420, 420 lab;
- 19 hours in chemistry: CHM 111*, 111 lab, 112, 112 lab, 211, 211 lab, 212, 212 lab, 301;
- 11 hours in biochemistry: BCH 305, 305 lab, 306, 330, 498;
- 15 hours in mathematics and physics: MTH 200 and 281*, PHY 101* or 201* and PHY 102 or 202.
* Passing the math placement could be required before enrolling in some introductory courses.
