Information for All Music Majors

Applied Music

The Music Department offers instruction in piano, organ, voice, classical guitar, percussion, and all string, brass, and woodwind instruments. Students may also study jazz improvisation, accompanying, and composition. There are eight levels in each major performance applied area. Levels one, two, and three are considered pre-major. Music Education majors must be assigned level seven to student teach and complete level seven to graduate.  Music Performance majors must complete level eight to graduate.  B.A. majors must be assigned level six to graduate.  (The levels of competency are available from the Music Department.)

Private lessons are given each week. Students may register for applied lessons as 1 (half-hour lesson), 2 (hour lesson), or 3 (hour lesson) credits. Music majors are required to attend all assigned studio classes in their applied area. 

Performance majors are required to perform a junior and senior recital; Music Education majors are required to perform a senior recital.

Music Ensembles

All Music Education and Performance majors are required to participate in a major ensemble every semester.  B.A. in Music students are required to participate for four semesters.  Ensemble participation is required every semester for students receiving a music major scholarship.

Piano Proficiency

All Music Education and Performance majors have piano performance requirements. Details are printed in the Music Department Handbook. Students take piano lessons until they have met the required applied level and passed the functional piano proficiency.

MUS 100

All music students register for MUS 100 Music Seminar every semester.  Music seminar meets every Thursday 9:30 - 10:40, during which time students have the opportunity to perform in department recitals.  As part of MUS 100, students are also required to attend a specified number of concerts throughout the semester.
