House of Mercy - Supporting the Homeless of Rochester
Senior Nursing students taking Community Health partner with the House of Mercy in Rochester, NY for an important experience. At the House of Mercy, they wash the feet of the homeless. In our society the homeless are not highly valued and this opportunity gives Roberts nursing students the chance to spend time with the people at the House of Mercy.
Students are encouraged to listen to the people’s stories as they wash feet, massage the skin, and give a new pair of socks.
On September 5, 2017 a student noted, “My preconceived notions about the homeless were based on fear knowing the area. Honestly, it was one of the best experiences I have had. I overcame a bias today.”
Another student said, “It was a very humbling experience when you realize they are just people who matter. They shared their stories and their concerns about health. Their gratitude was very evident.”
And finally on October 5, 2017 a student wrote, “I hate feet, but I am so glad I did this because it very much blessed me. I pray that I may have blessed someone with my actions today.”
