Agustin Rodriguez ‘14: Serving Through Banking

Agustin Rodriguez '14 (Marketing and International Business) only applied to Roberts Wesleyan College. For him the “deal was sealed” when his best friend’s father, who was also a pastor, took him to visit the campus during high school. “I fell in love with the campus and the area,” said Agustin. At Roberts he felt guided by professor Dr. Ron Necoechea, staff member Kathleen Raniewicz, and the Starr’s (Carrie and Erv), who still impact his life today.  “I have benefited from great mentorship and deliberate attention to me and my fiancée Suzanne Day (also a Roberts Grad),” he said.

Agustin is a licensed banker at ESL Federal Credit Union serving in the Irondequoit area. His job is to uncover areas of need and serve customers, as a result he gets to listen to people’s stories all day: some encouraging faith stories and other unheard tragic stories; it is from these stories that he continues to grow and be challenged in his career. Agustin feels that his achievements have little to do with being a banker or with sales goals, but has to do with the person he has become through the decisions he makes each day -- whether financial, with loved ones at home or with God.  His advice for students interested in the financial world is that banking is a great place to start.  In this field, you can build experience, show integrity and build trust.

His favorite memory while at Roberts was with Enactus; being a part of the final four competition and being in the running for the national championship of Enactus USA. “It was one of my proudest moments as we clearly saw God’s favor over our small school with a big appetite for more,” Agustin said.  He is also proud of his two younger sisters who also chose Roberts – Damara has already graduated and Desiree will graduate in December ’16.

Agustin's hope for the next 150 years would be to see the College develop programs that help the poor; the future should include a mission to improve their life situation starting with academic success.

Family information: Agustin's mother and father live in northeast Ohio.  He is engaged to be married in August 2016 to Suzanne Day.
