Major Requirements

Total Liberal Arts Hours: 60

For General Education Requirements see the requirements list that can be found under the General Education Council. Exceptions to the requirements are as follows: LITR 1010 excluded (LITR 101, COMP 1010/1020 cannot count toward the major); only one fine arts course is required (ARTS 1010, MUSC 1040, OR FNA 1020); PSYC 2030 must be taken to meet the behavioral science requirement; CGEO 2100 must be taken to meet the history, economics, or social sciences requirement.

Minimum Requirements: Students must maintain a GPA of 2.7 in the major and overall. Students must receive no grade less than a C in the major; a minimum grade of C in CMC 101 and mathematics proficiency course; a minimum grade of C+ in COMP 1010, COMP 1020, and 100-level EDUC courses; and a minimum grade of B- in 200+ level EDU courses.

Application to the Major: A special application form and requirements must be obtained from the Department of Language & Literature or online at the Department’s intranet page (the standard institutional major application will not be accepted). The application must be submitted at the end of the sophomore year. A minimum overall GPA of 2.7 is required to be accepted into and to remain in the major. In addition, students must apply to the Department of Teacher Education after completing two TEDU courses (usually TEDU 1850 and TEDU 1950). Students must also apply to student teach by the appropriate deadline. Contact the Teacher Education Department for specific deadlines and forms.

Major Requirements: 39 hours as follows:

  • LITR 3150;
  • Two composition courses (COMP 3200 and COMP 3410);
  • Four survey courses with one of them being World Literature (LITR 2010, 2020, 2040, 2050, 2070, 2080);
  • Two major author courses (LITR 3030, 3050, 3120);
  • One theory course (COMM 3010 or LITR 3070);
  • Two senior-level literature courses (LITR 4050 and either LITR 4020 or LITR 4030);
  • Three semester hours of electives selected from any of the previously listed courses not already used to meet a requirement or from the following: LITR 3040, 3090, 3140.

Students who are pursuing Adolescence Education English for grades 7-12 (with an extension in English for grades 5-6) are also required to complete:

  • A 39-hour core of education courses (TEDU 1850, 1950 & 1950 OPE, 2350, 2600, 2940, 3570 & 3570 OPE, 3600 & 3600 OPE, 3850 & 3850 OPE, PSYC 2030 Lab, 4020A & 4020B, 4420);
  • Training in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment;
  • Training in School Violence Prevention and Intervention. Students must also complete 100 hours of fieldwork, called observation-participation experience (OPE).

Students who are pursuing dual certification in Adolescence Education English for grades 7-12 and Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist are required to complete:

  • A 51-hour core of education courses, including courses for teaching content to students with disabilities (TEDU 1850, 1950 & 1950 OPE, 2350, 2940, 3570 & 3570 OPE, 3600 & 3600 OPE, 3650 & 3650 OPE, 3850 & 3850 OPE, 3900, PSYC 2030 Lab, HIST 3610, MATH 3610, NSCI 3610, 4020A & 4020B, 4420);
  • Training in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment;
  • Training in School Violence Prevention and Intervention. Students pursuing dual certification must complete 150 hours of fieldwork, called observation-participation experience (OPE).
