Ages 5 and older. Weekly private lessons are offered. Students may begin study without prior training, although prior early childhood music instruction is recommended for young children. Instruction is offered in an approach that blends traditional and Suzuki methods, along with fun fiddle music and chamber music opportunities. All students under the age of 19 perform individually in an annual solo recital and are required to participate in the group classes.
Saturday morning group classes (Roberts Community Strings) are scheduled approximately 20 times throughout the year. Students learn musical skills such as ensemble playing, listening, and following leaders. Classes are also used for ear training, rhythm games, and the rehearsal and review of pieces. Performance opportunities include orchestra concerts, fiddling, and small ensembles. The Roberts Community Strings have performed at Kilbourn Hall and Hale Auditorium with the New Horizions Orchestra, and recently opened for the Roberts Wesleyan College Community Orchestra. They have performed in joint concert with the collegiate Chamber Orchestra and have also performed for the Genesee County Museum Fiddle Fest, RWC Homecoming festivities, and other area community functions.
