NMUN•NY Conference 2016 –  Next Generation of International Leaders

Seven students from the Roberts Model U.N. Team participated in the world’s largest United Nations simulation during the National Model United Nations New York (NMUN•NY) Conference, held each spring in New York City.

Over 5,000 university students, more than 300 faculty members, along with hundreds of volunteers from more than 50 countries from around the world participate annually. Delegates from each college represented different nations and attended committee meetings to express the interests of their nations.

The Roberts Model U.N. Team represented Singapore in various committees including the first, second and fourth general assemblies, discussing global peacekeeping efforts, Habitat III, which addressed environmental issues, and other commissions, which addressed additional international issues.

Prior to attending the conference, the team had the added benefit of a video conference with the U.S. Ambassador to Singapore, Kirk Wagar ’90.  Ambassador Wagar took time out of his busy schedule to discuss important details pertaining to Singapore’s importance to its region and the world.

The NMUN•NY provides cooperative, hands-on, experiential learning allowing students to confront a range of topics with the perspective of their assigned country or organization. Through these experiences – during preparation, in committee sessions, and even in hallway caucuses – students develop an appreciation of differing viewpoints, experience the challenges of negotiation, see the rewards of cooperation, broaden their world view, and discover the human side of international relations and diplomacy.

While in NYC, the Roberts Model U.N. Team attended Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum and attended the Broadway musical The Lion King.
