Current local PWBA standout Heather D'Errico will serve as head coach in the program's inaugural season
Roberts Wesleyan College Athletic Director Bob Segave has announced the addition of women’s bowling as the College’s 17th intercollegiate sport, which will begin competition this fall.
“We are excited to add women’s bowling at Roberts Wesleyan,” Segave said. “The Northeast region, including Rochester, has long been viewed as a bowling hotbed, and the interest has been there for us to add the sport. We are happy to offer this new opportunity for Roberts Wesleyan students and the community.”
The Redhawks will become the fourth East Coast Conference member to add women’s bowling, which held its first conference championship in March. Molloy College and Daemen College began competition last season and LIU Post has added a program for this coming year. The ECC also brought on Adelphi University, Felician University, Franklin Pierce University, Kutztown University and Lincoln Memorial University as associate members for the new championship sport.
Nationally, women’s bowling is one of the fastest-growing sports at the collegiate level. A combined 71 teams from all three NCAA Divisions competed in 2015-16, including 26 Division II programs. There is one NCAA championship, which combines all three divisions.
Roberts Wesleyan is the only college in the Rochester area to offer women’s bowling as an intercollegiate sport. A winter sport at the collegiate level, it runs from mid to late October through late March.
Additionally, Segave announced that local professional bowler Heather D’Errico has been hired as the new program’s head coach.
“Coach D’Errico is an accomplished bowler with strong ties to the region and I believe she will make an immediate impact with her new team,” Segave said. “As she is currently competing at the highest level professionally, Heather knows what it takes to be successful in this sport, and I believe we have made a tremendous hire.”
D’Errico is an accomplished athlete who competes in the Professional Women’s Bowling Association. She earned NAIA All-American honors in 2011 at Roberts Morris University in Chicago.
The schedule and roster for the program’s inaugural season will be announced later this summer.
