Matthew Ballard, Tour Guide!

Matthew Ballard, Collection Services Librarian, recently welcomed students from Roberts to Mt. Albion Cemetery for a tour! Students from Brenda McQuillan's SWK 705 visited Albion as part of a day-long session focused on grief and bereavement. The morning was spent at Christopher-Mitchell Funeral Home and transitioned into lunch and a short lecture at the Hoag Library followed by the cemetery tour.

Matthew is the historian for Orleans County and led the class on a two hour walk through the beautiful historic cemetery. His program focused on cemetery symbolism, imagery and burial practices from the early 19th century. Mt. Albion is one of the oldest rural park cemeteries in Western New York. Established in 1843, the cemetery followed the design of Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Massachusetts and serves as the final resting for Orleans County’s most prominent residents. Students had the opportunity to visit the graves of NYS Lt. Gov. Sanford E. Church and Georgia Gov. Rufus B. Bullock, with a mix of local history sprinkled into the tour.

The weather was dreary, but it was a fantastic day nonetheless!
