The Roberts Community Mourns the Loss of Dorothy Whittingham
It is with deep sadness that the Roberts Wesleyan College community acknowledges the loss of long-time faculty member and friend, Dorothy Whittingham.
Ms. Whittingham chaired the division for more than 32 years. Through her dedication and leadership, she encouraged and inspired countless students to pursue careers in nursing and nurse education.
Congratulations to Dr Merriam
The Department of Nursing is pleased to announce that Deborah Merriam recently completed a Doctorate of Nursing Science at The Sage Colleges. As part of her program, Deborah completed a dissertation titled,
"Intersection of Re-designated National League for Nursing Centers of Excellence ™ and Quality in Nursing Education.”
Deborah conducted qualitative content analysis of the final applications of nursing programs that earned re-designation for Nursing Centers of ExcellenceTM in the category of “Creating Environments that Enhanced Student Learning and Professional Development.” Her purpose was to identify characteristics of Re-designated National League for Nursing Centers of ExcellenceTM representing the intersection between quality and excellence.
Deborah’s groundbreaking study identified characteristics representing intersection of quality and excellence as:
- connections through relationships
- communities of learning and service,
- support for students and faculty,
- connections through technology,
- use of innovation, and
- a system focus
The characteristics and educational practices identified in this research represent best practices from exemplary schools of nursing that are exceptional and should be emulated by others seeking excellence in nursing education.
Deborah’s research was supported by the 2012 Roberts Wesleyan College Summer Scholarship Grant Program.
Additionally, Deborah was selected as a Broughton Fellow in Creative and Applied Science for the 2012-2013 academic year at The Sage Colleges in recognition of an “exemplary research performance coupled with an outstanding academic record.”
You have the opportunity to hear Dr. Merriam share her results on Monday, April 22nd at 4 pm in the Smith Science Auditorium.
