Creation - To Tend and Keep

The Barnes Science and Christian Faith Symposium 2012

The second bi-annual Barnes Symposium was held on October 29, 2012. Creation—To Tend and Keep is underwritten by the Barnes Symposium. The vision for the symposium is to assist the RWC and NES communities in developing an intellectual basis for understanding the principle that all truth is God’s truth. Dr. David and Avis Barnes have been active participants in the Roberts Wesleyan College community since 1970.

Creation—To Tend and Keep presented creation care from the position that we are, first, children of God and so are stewards of creation. The featured speaker was Dr. Fred Van Dyke, wildlife biologist, scientific and management consultant, and teacher. Fred has taught on numerous areas of environmental science as well as the intersection of the natural world with ethics, policy, and theology.  Students, faculty, staff, and the community were invited to participate in three sessions.

Learning From Creation—Look at the Birds of the Air

Practicing Conservation—A Faith Tradition of Serving and Protecting Creation

Students and guests also enjoyed an informal discussion with Dr. Van Dyke around the dinner meal.  Due to adverse weather from Hurricane “Sandy” the evening session, Crafting a Theologically Informed Environmental Ethic was cancelled.
