Congratulations to our new Smith Scholars!
The Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences and the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics sponsors Merlin G. Smith Science-Mathematics Teaching Assistantships to entering students each year. On occasion current students are selected to fill vacancies. Students selected for this program are designated as Smith Scholars. Selection is based on high school record, SAT or ACT scores, and an interview with faculty from the department. Awards will be independent of and in addition to any other financial aid. Dr. Merlin G. Smith, a mathematician and astronomer, was President of Roberts Wesleyan from 1933-1957. The Math and Science Club is beginning another active year. We have a few new officers and some returning officers: Seth Amidon (Chemistry), Maggie Bisig (Math), Amber Frisbie (CDS), Rebeckah Johnson (Chemistry), and Gisela Ocasio (Biology). Our ice cream social kick-off was well attended and we enjoyed meeting new students and promoting our fall events. We celebrated Homecoming 2012 with another win (our second) in the grocery cart competition. We made a replica of the Crothers Clock Tower and a DeLorean for our Back to the Future theme where students dressed in either 1950s or 1980s costumes. Over 20 people marched and we had a great time! We are continuing our Adopt-A-School program with School #36 in Rochester and are forming three teams of students to teach monthly hands-on science lessons to fourth graders there. We look forward to the interactions and challenges that come with teaching! Of course, we celebrated Mol Day in October (10/23)!
