Doctor of Psychology - Practica & Internships

Metropolitan Rochester and surrounding counties offer many excellent practicum and internship opportunities. The area boasts a highly developed social welfare system with nearly 700 agencies, many of which offer mental health/psychological services. The six-county area includes many public and private educational institutions for school psychology placements.

Practicum training is integrated throughout the program, beginning in the very first semester.  Practicum experiences may include assessment, intervention, consultation, and supervision.  Settings may include schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, forensic settings, residential treatment centers, and counseling centers. Populations may be diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, physical disability, socioeconomic status, and diagnostic category.  All students will have practicum experiences in both school and clinical settings in order to develop a broad base of skills and knowledge in working with children and families.

In the third year of the program, students will complete a master’s level school psychology internship that is required for certification as school psychologists.  In the fourth year, students will complete a one-year full-time internship experience in clinical or school psychology or a combination of the two. The internship is a planned programmed sequence of supervised engagement in appropriate psychology activities that has been deemed to be satisfactory in quality, breadth, scope and nature, and prepares students for the professional practice of psychology.
