Moving Day!

Classroom in the lower level of Hastings Center

Today is move in day at Hastings Center.  Movers are taking boxes, computers and other needs for faculty and staff from Carpenter Hall to new homes in Hastings. Tomorrow faculty and staff will begin unpacking and settling in. Classroom equipment installation has begun (projectors, speakers and screens) with teaching stations (computers, audio and video equipment) yet to be installed. Workers continue to finish last minute projects such as tile in the entries and building trim on the exterior.

Move in scheduled for June 12, 2008

Carpeting being installed in a second floor office.

With move in scheduled for June 12, workers are rushing to finish the new Hastings Center. Carpeting is going in and doors and windows finished up. Outside new walk ways and a turning circle for the rear entrance are being finished. Once the last minute work is done on the inside, class room electronics and furniture for all of the rooms can be set up. (note: the pictures for this update were taken over the past two weeks)

Coming Together

As painters apply finish coats of paint the ceiling tile, light fixtures, vents and sprinkler heads are going in on both levels. Most spaces inside have glass installed in interior windows. Once done, a final cleanup of the interior and then doors and carpeting can be installed. Exterior painting, walks and entrances are being finished. Projected move in for Teacher Ed and Business is mid June.

Ceiling tile and vent in a second floor office

A lot has been accomplished in the week since the last update. Final coats of paint are being applied to second floor walls. Where the painting is done, ceiling tile and vents, electrical fixtures, smoke detectors, etc. are being installed.  Exit signs are up, window glass is being installed in interior windows and emergency strobes and sirens are going in. Workers are finishing the dry wall taping and mudding on the lower level which will lead to painting, etc. With the early spring weather exterior painting has begun.

Workers have been painting on the second floor and ceiling tile grid work is being installed as each space is finished. Mudding and taping have been proceeding on the first floor where painting will soon start. The new canopy for the rear entrance is taking shape.

Finish work begins.

With the majority of the dry wall installed workers have begun painting on the east side of the second floor as others finished taping and mudding on the west side of the same floor.  Grid work can begin for the drop ceilings as the paint work is completed. Next up workers will move to the lower level to finish taping and mudding to be followed by painting there. Still to come are fixtures (lighting, plumbing, ventillation, etc.), inside windows and doors and floor treatments.

Workers have been busy since the last update with sheet rock nearly all installed and seams taped and plastered. The next step will be a slurry coat then primer and paint. With warmer weather permitting, the soffitts are being installed on the exterior of the building and the archway in the lower entrance is receiving its brickwork. Boilers and other plumbing are in place in the boiler room and service panels for electricity are being installed and wiring from throughout the building to the terminal room for the network has been installed. As each week passes the final shape of the interior becomes more evident.

Rapid progress

A new larger water main was connected today to supply the needs of the Hastings Center. Work progresses on the installation of dry wall and many offices and classrooms are taking shape. Workers are installing insullation on pipes which will carry heated/chilled water to air handlers at various locations throughout the building. Support columns for the rear entry canopy are being erected and the permanant  entry doors are being installed on both levels.

Dry wall installation begins

Workers have begun the big job of installing insulation and drywall on the second floor of Hastings Center. As the work progresses it becomes easier to visualize the finished facility. The footers for the rear entrance canopy are also in place and workers continue to install heating and air conditioning equipment and ductwork and wiring.

Work continues on plumbing,wiring and ductwork

In addition to work to complete ductwork, plumbing and wiring that will be hidden when dry wall installation begins, workers have poured the footers for the rear entrance canopy on the lower level. Door and window frames are nearly all installed and insulation has been placed on some external walls on the second level.
