Dream Come True, by Dr. Steve Pulos

One of my dreams came true when I was offered the position of part-time professor of Psychology at Roberts. I’ve worked as an adjunct in the School Psychology program since 2005 and I was content to continue in that capacity as long as the people in the Department would have me. But lo and behold, a faculty position became available and I was happy, but a little nervous, to apply for it. After all, my forte was as a practitioner, not a professor. God must have had plans for me though, because I was offered the job despite my lack of professorial experience.

Since September I’ve gotten to know the wonderful people in the Psychology Department in a way I never did as an adjunct. They are truly a gifted, generous group of people—every bit as welcoming to a new faculty member as they are to the students whom they teach. I could go on and on about what special people they are, but you know that already.

Let me say a little bit about the transition from adjunct instructor to professor. As an adjunct you come to know your students, but your relationships with most other faculty are limited to those few occasions where your paths meet coincidentally. You come to campus, you teach and you leave. You certainly don’t have the full experience of how truly extraordinary Roberts is. You are unaware of remarkable things: the prayers before each faculty meeting, the depth of compassion of your colleagues, and the efforts that the professors make on each student’s behalf to make the Roberts educational experience all that it can be.  You also miss out on how inspirational the college’s administrators are as they guide the Roberts community in their Christian missions.

This new awareness is an epiphany to me. It’s also a gift that I intend to cherish. Let me offer my thanks for the opportunity to fully participate in the Roberts experience.
