Psychology Department Updates

One of the side benefits of contributing to this Spring/Summer Newsletter is the affirmation that yes, indeed, we are past the Rochester winter weather!   Those of us who have braced ourselves from the elements during a very long, snowy winter are reveling in the warmed weather on campus!   Robins, green grass, sunshine…

Now I am more mindful than ever of God’s grace and goodness, as the winter months found me personally challenged by a medical emergency in my extended family.     The blessing of being a part of a Christian community such as Roberts Wesleyan has never been more real to me.   It’s a fairly common practice for faculty to engage their students in prayer in the classroom.   I do it all the time with my students, often soliciting prayer requests from them. Where this experience became more powerful and real was when one of my students offered to pray for my family’s medical situation during class prayer time.   What a blessing and comfort for me! But, you see, that’s what being a part of a Christian community, like Roberts Wesleyan, is all about.   And, that’s why I love Roberts Wesleyan College and consider it a privilege to work here.

Of course, obtaining an excellent education should be at the forefront of ones decision to attend a particular college.   But participating and growing in a faith community that cares for each person wholistically (spiritually, emotionally, socially, psychologically, etc.), enhances that educational journey in immeasurable ways. The Psychology Department lives out its commitment to provide a caring and supportive learning environment for its students.   Our goal is to walk alongside our students, helping them to become well educated in their discipline and in its interface with the Christian faith.   At the same time, we want to see our students grow in their spiritual journeys – wherever they might be along that road.   As a faculty, we consider it an honor to pray with our students, sharing their pain and celebrating their successes!

Speaking of successes, we celebrated the graduations of 24 students in May (12 from our undergraduate Psychology program and 12 from our masters’ programs in School Psychology and School Counseling).   I’m feeling that sense of sadness that comes from having to say good-bye.   Thankfully, very shortly I’ll be experiencing the excitement of meeting our incoming first year and transfer students!   Do you know of someone who could benefit from studying with us at Roberts?   Please send me contact information so I can personally reach out to that potential student.   Are you an alum?   How about sending us an e-mail to let us know what you’re up to?     We’d love to hear from you!

Blessings and God’s peace—

Dr. Grimm
