Dr. Christine Nickel and Richard Nickel, MFA
Lecture: "Educational Sculpting"
Christine (Chris) Nickel grew up in Churchville, New York. She received her BS in Communications/Media at SUNY Fredonia and worked for nine years at WORK-13 (now WHAM). After getting married and spending a year in North Dakota, she and Richard moved to Norfolk, VA, where Chris began working on a MS Ed in Instructional Design and Technology, later completing her PhD (2010). Her research interests include cooperative and collaborative learning in online and blended environments, the community of inquiry model, service learning, and integrating technology into various face-to-face and virtual classrooms. Chris has taught online and face-to-face courses at numerous institutions, now teaching at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, where she is an Instructional Designer.
Born in Rochester, New York, Richard Nickel received a B.S. in Art Education from SUNY Buffalo. He received a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (2000). In the fall of 2000 he began teaching Art Education and Ceramics at Valley City University in North Dakota. In 2002 Richard began teaching at Old Dominion University where he is Associate Professor of Ceramics. Richard has been an active artist and educator and has been published in several books on ceramics. His juried and invitational shows are numerous, and he has also been awarded several grants on research in Education and Ceramics, the Faculty Innovator Grant, an ODU Summer Research Fellowship, and most recently the ODU Service Learning Mini Grant.
