Dr. Justin Behrend - Cultural Enrichment Lecture
Time: 4:00 PM - 5:15 PM | Location: Smith Science Center Auditorium

Dr. Justin Behrend, Associate Professor of History, State University of New York at Geneseo

“The Legacy of Slave Emancipation: Commemorating Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday”

Dr. Justin Behrend is associate professor of history at SUNY Geneseo, where he has taught since 2007. His research interests include nineteenth century U.S. history, African American history, Atlantic World slavery, and Southern history. Dr. Behrend has published articles on a slave insurrectionary scare in Mississippi and on the African-American memory of Reconstruction.  His most recent publication is his first book, Reconstructing Democracy: Grassroots Black Politics in the Deep South after the Civil War.

His talk will explore a relatively unknown story in United States history.  After the Civil War, former slaves created a sweeping political movement that transformed the South.  Within a few short years after emancipation, not only were black men voting but they had elected thousands of ex-slaves to political offices.  Behrend shows how freedpeople set up a political system rooted in egalitarian values wherein local communities rather than powerful individuals held power and ordinary people exercised unprecedented influence in governance. In so doing, he invites us to reconsider not only our understanding of Reconstruction but also the nature and origins of democracy more broadly.

This event is sponsored by the Roberts Wesleyan College Cultural Enrichment Committee.
