We’ve all been there before. Staying up past our bed times to un-tag pictures from freshman year in college, thinking to ourselves, “Why did I think posting this was a good idea!?” Then you remember, back then the only people who could view your Facebook profile were your peers, and they loved that picture! However, as you grow, your social networking sites need to mature with you; but how much damage control do we really have to do now?
According to Lisa Johnson Mandell, not cleaning up your online profiles can cause catastrophic for job hunters. An example she brings up is if a person “Likes” a comment that says, “I shouldn’t have to press 1 for English. We are in the US. Learn the language.” This can be seen as racist to many HR workers who do background checks on potential employees. She then goes on to mention that background checks are very extensive and can trace not only photos, but every post, like, or comment you ever made on any social networking site, ever.
Imagine that. You can’t delete your old Myspace because your account has been frozen, but the inside joke you posted on your friends wall in high school is still out there. Terrifying.
In the end it makes you think; should we be declined jobs because of a moment frozen in time, or should background checks be a little more lenient.
I’d just like to know one thing. When did Facebook became so serious?
Agreed. Those of us who lived our ‘adolescence’ in “undigital” times were lucky. It is a real problem that the things can’t be deleted but that is the nature of the internet beast.
I’m not sure when everything came so serious but I know that it is. I hear stories every week about some young person who is suffering the consequences of an innocently ‘inappropriate’ photo or post.
To those in my generation (yeah, old people) I say remember when and then cut these folks a little slack.
