#5 Lady Raiders Defeat #4 Geneseo in Wendy’s Classic First Round

The fifth seeded Roberts Wesleyan College Lady Raiders defeated fourth seeded Geneseo 55 – 42 in a first round match-up of the Wendy’s College Classic played Tuesday evening at the Voller Athletic Center on the Roberts Wesleyan College campus. Roberts moves to 9-6 on the season, while the Blue Knights fall to 5-5. The victory advances the Lady Raiders to the semi finals against The College at Brockport. The Blue Knights raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first half, and eventually extended that lead to as many as 8 points, before a basket by freshman forward Lindsay Kendall closed the score to 27-21 at the half. Roberts opened the second half strong, going on a 10-4 run to tie the game at 31-31. Sophomore forward Sarah Child led the Raiders with 5 points during the run. Freshman point guard Kelly Grinnell started the run with a three pointer, and also had a steal and 2 assists during the spurt. The Lady Raiders then outscored the Blue Knights 23-6 over the next several minutes to open a 17 point lead with 1:00 to play. The run was highlighted by strong play from the Roberts bench. Senior Lindsay Beckwith and freshmen Marissa Bunce and Kendall contributed to the run. Bunce’s long three pointer as the shot clock was hitting zero was a back breaker for Geneseo. Bunce led all scored with 11 points, while Child joined her double figures with 10. Beckwith and Grinnell added 7 points each. Sophomore guard Morgan Skiff added 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Kendall added 6 points for the Lady Raiders. After the game, coach Bob Segave said, “This tournament is filled with very good teams. We knew Geneseo would play extremely hard. One of the things we talked about was our bench play. Geneseo plays a lot of players, so we one of our pregame goals was to outscore their bench. We did that by 29-23 margin, and that was huge for us. Beckwith, Lowell, Kendall, Bunce and Bellinger played great minutes. Our defense and rebounding was much better in the second half as well and we really cut down on the turnovers in the second half.” With the victory, Roberts advances to the semi final round of the Wendy’s College Classic to play 8th seeded Brockport. Brockport was a 58 – 54 winner over Nazareth College in the other first round game played at Roberts Wesleyan College. The semifinal match-ups are being played at the University of Rochester. Tip-off is scheduled to 6:15 on Thursday January 14, 2010. Radio coverage is available from WYSL-AM 1040 and on the web at www.wysl1040.com.
