Men’s Soccer Sign Two Top Local Players

The Roberts Wesleyan College Men’s Soccer Program continues to attract talented local high school players.

This year’s first signing was Jonny Lobene from Aquinas High School.  Johnny has played varsity soccer for the past five years (one year for Gates Chili and four years for Aquinas) and had 30 career goals and 45 career assists.  In 2006, Aquinas won the state championship and in 2008 Johnny was named an All State Player.

Johnny has great connections to Roberts Wesleyan College.  Johnny’s older brother, Dan Lobene, is graduating from Roberts Wesleyan College this upcoming spring.  Dan was an American Mideast Conference, National Christian College Athletic Association Conference Player and an NAIA Regional Player for the Roberts Wesleyan College Men’s Soccer Team.   Johnny’s High School Coach is Howard Allen who was an outstanding soccer player at Roberts Wesleyan College and is a Roberts Wesleyan College Athletics Hall of Fame member.

Roberts Wesleyan Head Coach Mark Fish was thrilled with Johnny’s decision.  “I have been watching Johnny for the past three years hoping he would attend Roberts Wesleyan College.  I have so much enjoyed coaching Dan and the amazing support from the Lobene family and I am very excited that family connection will continue.  Johnny is a driven highly technical offensive talent who will have an immediate impact to our program.  I have spoken with many local high school coaches and Johnny Lobene has a tremendous reputation as a player and a person.   I am also pleased that Johnny is seeking a Christian atmosphere that will provide opportunity for him to grow in his faith.  Johnny is a great addition to our program and campus.

Webster Christian School standout, Derek Holmes, has signed with the Roberts Wesleyan College Men’s Soccer Team.

Derek has had an outstanding career at Webster Christian High School setting a school record of 91 goals and 58 assists.  Derek was named a 2009 2nd team All State Player, 1st team All- Greater Rochester Player and the 2007 and 2009 Private- Parochial Player of the Year.  Derek is an exceptional athlete who also plays basketball and baseball for his high school.  Derek’s father, Gerry Holmes, had the opportunity to coach Derek for Webster Christian High School.

Roberts Wesleyan Head Coach Mark Fish had this to say about Derek.  “Derek certainly has had an amazing high school career and has achieved some well deserved recognition.  Derek has size, athleticism and obviously can score goals.  Derek will be a very versatile and an impact player for our program.  Over the past few months I have gotten to know Derek and his family and learned that Derek has a heart for the Lord.  Derek has benefited from attending Webster Christian High School and was seeking a Christian College.  Derek is a great fit for Roberts Wesleyan College and will be adding so much to our campus and soccer program”.
