Merlin G. Smith Science Center Renamed Merlin G. Smith Hall

Opened and dedicated in connection with the 1970 Homecoming Activities, the Merlin G. Smith Science Center was built to honor the upstanding legacy of President Merlin G. Smith (1933-1957) and further Christian education and academic excellence in the sciences. As a college professor, scientist, evangelical church statesman, and community leader, Smith’s “career of devoted service was marked by indomitable courage, unflagging zeal, unshakable faith, imaginative vision, dogged patience, profound wisdom and humble sacrifice” (1957, CHESBRONIAN).

Due to the addition of the Crothers Science & Nursing Center in the fall of 2015, a name change from “Merlin G. Smith Science Center” to “Merlin G. Smith Hall” has been proposed to both avoid the confusion of competing science centers and to continue to honor the legacy of Merlin G. Smith.  This proposed name change was officially approved by the Roberts Board of Trustees on April 14, 2016.
