Recent Faculty Presentations and Activity: Berry, Gregory, Johnson, Middleton, Stevens

Dr. Elvera Berry and Roberts senior, Micki Burdick, presented papers at the Eastern Communication Association Convention in Baltimore (March 30 – April 2). Elvera, whose paper focused on Frederick Douglass’s “Voice for the Voiceless,” joined university professors from George Washington, Maryland, and Duquesne in a panel on Revolutionary Moments in the Rhetoric of Race; she also served as a member of the Executive Council of the Association. Micki and three Roberts graduates currently in Ph.D. programs at Maryland and Duquesne, spoke on “Culture and Media.” Two other Roberts students also attended the convention, and Dr. Paul Stewart was the respondent to a top-papers panel.

Dr. Elaine Gregory attended and presented at the national Society of Health and Physical Education (SHAPE America) conference earlier this month. Her presentation was entitled “There’s no place like home…schooling physical education, that is!” Colleagues from the University of Delaware, Radford University, and Shephard University contributed, but the focus was on the Roberts Homeschool physical education program.

Denise Johnson and Elizabeth Stevens, Assistant Professors of Education, presented at the National edTPA Implementation Conference on Friday, April 1, 2016, in Savannah, GA. Their presentation, entitled Literacy 101: Understanding the edTPA Literacy Terms and Tasks, appealed to about 100 conference attendees interested in learning more about the literacy terms associated with edTPA, the teacher certification requirement.

J. Richard Middleton, Professor of Biblical Worldview and Exegesis at Northeastern Seminary, has been appointed a 2016 Theology Fellow for BioLogos. In this capacity, he will be writing a series of blog posts on Biblical Faith and Evolution, intended to bring orthodox Trinitarian theology into conversation with contemporary science. On March 11, 2016, Professor Middleton spoke on “A New Heaven and a New Earth” in the Windows on the World lecture series, followed by a lunch discussion with faculty, staff, and students, at Eastern University, St. Davids, PA. A shorter version of Professor Middleton’s talk at Eastern University was recently published online as “To Love What God Loves: Understanding the Cosmic Scope of Redemption,” in Catalyst, a magazine for United Methodists.
