Miriam Moore '14 - Making a Difference In the City of Rochester

Miriam Moore ’14 (Master of Strategic Leadership) was recently hired as the Chief Development Officer of the Settlement Houses of Rochester Foundation. Miriam is responsible for branding and marketing efforts, and developing new streams of revenue through cultivation of relationships with corporate donors. Miriam graduated from both the Organizational Management and Master of Science in Strategic Leadership at Roberts.

Miriam credits her Roberts experience for helping prepare her for her work, and she sees her work at the Settlement Houses of Rochester Foundation as a true ministry. Miriam writes, “Roberts Wesleyan College—specifically the MSL program encouraged a marriage of strong academics and a meaningful relationship with God. As the program went on—I began to realize, intellectual, professional and spiritual well-being should be woven together… Professor Rose Nichols, as she pushed me to be the best me. She was sharp! And her spiritual walk was evident. She is a living example of everything I hope to be.”

Completing the MSL included some unexpected hurdles. Miriam deals with the complications from sickle cell anemia. She faced significant physical challenges at various points in the program, but through her will, faith, and support of the faculty was able to push through, excel, and graduate.

As Miriam went through the MSL program, she began to wrestle with her spirit and consider the future direction of her life. Ultimately, that wrestling led to the Settlement Houses of Rochester and her new position where she can truly make a difference in the lives of underserved individuals in the Rochester community.

The Settlement Houses of Rochester were originally created over a century ago to meet employment, housing, language, education, spiritual, and family needs in the City of Rochester. Today they offer a variety of neighborhood-based human services. Miriam loves what she does, and is sure that she has found a job that is truly a vocation.

Prior to her current position, Miriam worked for Katz Media (New York City), Fox Rochester, the Democrat & Chronicle, Gatehouse Media, and Phu Concepts, Inc. She serves on the board of directors for the Team E Foundation and the Autism Council of Rochester.

Miriam is married to her incredible husband, Derrick, and has two amazing daughters, Ericka and Halle.
